The American entertainment industry is currently attempting to recover from an unprecedented wave of pop album cancellations and delays, after entering a spiral of postponed tours and postponed releases of new music in the wake of the global COVID-19 crisis. What began as a health emergency quickly evolved into a cultural and economic disruption that reshaped release strategies across the entire music industry.\n\nAmong the most notable examples was global pop superstar Lady Gaga, who postponed the release of her sixth album Chromatica, originally scheduled for April 2020. She explained the decision by emphasizing the need to focus on the global crisis rather than on music promotion, and went on to help raise over $100 million for the fight against the virus through the international One World project.\n\nAt the same time, British singer Sam Smith, a four-time Grammy Award winner, made a dramatic announcement of his own, postponing the release of his third album in order to change its title and make what he described as \u201csignificant changes and additions\u201d to the record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But just before the industry-wide cancellation wave reached its peak, the beloved\u2014or controversial\u2014Canadian singer Justin Bieber managed to stage an impressive comeback to the global music industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bieber, who has accumulated an almost unbelievable number of 158 prestigious music and arts awards worldwide, recently married model Hailey Baldwin and returned to the musical spotlight a few months ago after what is considered an unusually long hiatus in entertainment industry terms\u2014nearly five years since the release of his last album Purpose in 2015. His return in January of that year was marked by the single \u201cYummy,\u201d released as a teaser for his fifth studio album Changes, which followed about a month later.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what exactly was so special about it, you may ask. The answer lies in the visual dimension. The music video that brought Bieber back into the headlines and has since accumulated over a quarter of a billion views on YouTube became the center of the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Framed within the cinematic composition of the \u201cYummy\u201d music video are replicas of the Caryatid statues, transforming what appears to be a pop video into an unexpected dialogue between contemporary pop culture and ancient sculpture.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

What, then, is so special about yet another set of statues shaped like men or women? If you have made it this far, the answer lies not in sculpture alone but in architecture. These figures are not simply decorative statues, but architectural columns sculpted in the form of specific women from ancient Greece: the Caryatids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The explanation for their name and role remains a matter of historical debate, and several interpretations exist. One of the more dramatic perhaps even sensational stories preserved in history comes from the writings of the famous Roman architect Vitruvius. According to his account, during the Persian Wars in the fifth century BCE, the inhabitants of the city of Caryae sided with the Persians against Athens. When the Athenians ultimately prevailed, they punished the city for its betrayal: the men were executed, and the women were enslaved. As a symbolic punishment, the women were condemned to bear their burden on their heads forever transformed, metaphorically and architecturally, into columns that carry the weight of buildings. In this interpretation, the Caryatids stand not only as architectural elements but as eternal reminders of the price of betrayal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what does all this history and carefully constructed visual-narrative aesthetics have to do with the \u201cYummy\u201d music video by Justin Bieber? I can only offer my own cynical interpretation one that, admittedly, was never confirmed with the director of the video and suggest that the representation of the enslaved women of Caryae functions as a metaphor for passive listeners, themselves enslaved to the consumption of highly industrialized pop music produced by the American culture industry. If I were to push this interpretation even further, I would argue that it serves as a reminder for all of us, as a society, that we are destined to \u201cpay\u201d indefinitely for our collective desire to consume popular culture.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
